If it is safe to do so, exit your vehicle and provide assistance to anyone who is injured. However if you find yourself on a busy road or highway, stay in your vehicle at all costs.
Call the police immediately. When on the phone with the 911 operators, calmly state what assistance you need
Take photographs of the damages done to your vehicle and the scene of the accident after emergency personnel arrive and say it is safe to do so
If you can, set up flares to warn other drivers about the accident
Once the police arrive, simply state the facts of the accident as calmly as you can. Being respectful and not placing blame is always a priority
Ask for a copy of the police report from the accident usually they are available after 7-10 business days
Note the name and badge number of the police officers assisting you
Write down all of the details you can remember from the accident
Keep a record of the correspondence that you have regarding your claim
