Commerce Department urges Minnesotans to review insurance policies and plans

SAINT PAUL, MN – The beginning of the New Year is a good time to consider whether your homeowner’s or renter’s insurance policies meet your needs. The Minnesota Department of Commerce urges you to take a look at your current insurance coverage to make sure you have the right fit.

“Now’s a good time, at the beginning of the new year, to check your home insurance policies to make sure you have the right coverage for you and your family,” said Commerce Commissioner Mike Rothman. “I also urge consumers to take stock of their belongings so that if an unfortunate event like a house fire occurs, making a claim on your insurance goes smoothly.”

The Commerce Department recommends updating your home inventory after the holiday season and to make sure your homeowners or rental policy is up-to-date. Take photos or a video or your prized possessions. Remember to note any antique items and their value so you can work with your insurance agent or company to ensure that they are properly covered.

Visit the Commerce Department’s Home Inventory webpage for information on how to create a home inventory including the tools available to help protect your belongings. The page also includes links to the NAIC's free smartphone app, myHOME, for iPhones and Android and Google phones to help make the process of creating a home inventory quick and easy.

When creating your home inventory, make sure you include as many details as possible about each item to go along with the photo or video. Most home insurance policies have standard limits for big-ticket items like electronics, art, jewelry or sporting equipment. Check your policy to see if your coverage is appropriate for the items you have in your home. Flooding is not covered under standard home or renter’s insurance policies. If your home is in an area prone to floods, you may want to consider adding flood insurance.

Protect Yourself from Fraud

Insurance fraud can happen to anyone. Protect yourself in 2015 and beyond by following these tips:

Research the insurance company or agent you are doing business with. Check if they are licensed to sell insurance products in Minnesota. You can see if a company is licensed by using the License Look-up Directory on the Commerce website. Ask for copies of everything you sign and keep a copy of the payment receipt or check for the initial premium payment you gave the agent for the policy. Call the insurance company if you don't receive a copy of the insurance policy outlining your coverage and its limitations within 30 days of your purchase. The Minnesota Department of Commerce is here to help.

Call our Consumer Services Center at 651-539-1600 or toll-free at 1-800-657-3602 (in Greater Minnesota) if you have any questions about your insurance or if you believe you have been a victim of a scam or fraud.
